THE POWER OF A SMALL ACT OF KIDNESS
THE POWER OF A SMALL ACT OF KIDNESS
Matthew 10:42 (NIV) –
“And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”
Introduction:
In this passage, Jesus reminds us of the significance of even the smallest acts of kindness done in His name. In a world that often celebrates grand gestures and big achievements, we sometimes overlook the power and importance of small, selfless acts. However, Jesus teaches us that in His Kingdom, no act of love, no matter how small, goes unnoticed or unrewarded.
1. The Simplicity of a Cup of Water:
A cup of cold water is not extravagant or expensive; it is a simple, basic need.
This small gesture is within the reach of every one of us. We don’t need to be wealthy, powerful, or influential to serve others. We just need to have a willing heart.
Jesus is teaching that even the simplest things we can do—things that may seem insignificant to us—are important in God's eyes when done out of love and compassion.
2. The Recipients: “The Little Ones”
Jesus refers to "little ones" here, indicating His disciples or those who belong to Him. But this can be extended to mean anyone in need.
The "little ones" represent the vulnerable, the overlooked, the marginalized—the ones the world might deem insignificant.
By serving the "little ones," we reflect Christ’s heart for the humble and needy. In serving them, we are serving Christ Himself (Matthew 25:40).
3. Serving in the Name of Jesus:
Acts of kindness are not just social deeds—they are spiritual when done in Jesus’ name.
The motivation behind our actions is crucial. When we offer our service in Jesus’ name, we are acknowledging that we belong to Him and are representing His love in the world.
Whether we serve through our time, resources, or words, doing so in the name of Jesus carries eternal value.
4. God’s Promise: “They will not lose their reward”
Jesus assures us that no act of kindness goes unrewarded in the Kingdom of Heaven.
This is not about earning salvation or seeking rewards but about God's recognition of our faithful service.
Sometimes, our small acts may seem unnoticed by others, but Jesus promises that God sees and remembers every gesture of love and service.
Conclusion:
As followers of Christ, we are called to reflect His love through our daily actions, no matter how small they may seem. A cup of cold water may not change the world, but it can change someone’s moment or day. When we offer kindness and care in Jesus' name, it becomes part of His work in the world.
May we be encouraged to serve others with whatever we have, knowing that God values every effort we make in His name. Let us remember: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).
