Are You Fully a True Christian?

Introduction

What does it mean to be a true Christian? Is it attending church regularly, giving generously, or living a morally upright life? While these are important aspects of Christian living, being a true Christian goes much deeper. In John 3:1-21, Jesus has a profound conversation with Nicodemus, a Pharisee and religious leader, that unveils the true essence of Christian faith.

1. The Need for a New Birth (John 3:3-7)

Jesus begins His dialogue with Nicodemus by making a startling statement: “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). Nicodemus, confused, asks how one can be born again when he is old. Jesus explains that this new birth is not a physical one but a spiritual transformation brought about by the Holy Spirit.

  • Application: Have you experienced the new birth? Being a true Christian isn’t about external actions but an internal transformation. True Christianity begins when we surrender our lives to Christ and allow the Holy Spirit to renew us from within.

2. Faith in Jesus Christ (John 3:14-16)

Jesus points Nicodemus to the story of Moses lifting up the bronze serpent in the wilderness (Numbers 21:4-9). Just as the Israelites were healed by looking at the bronze serpent, we are saved by looking to Jesus, who was lifted up on the cross for our sins. The well-known verse, John 3:16, encapsulates the gospel:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

  • Application: Do you believe in Jesus as your personal Savior? Faith is the key to salvation. A true Christian places complete trust in Christ’s finished work on the cross and lives a life that reflects that faith.

3. Living in the Light (John 3:19-21)

Jesus explains that many people prefer darkness over light because their deeds are evil. However, those who follow Christ live in the light, doing what is true and seeking to glorify God in all they do.

  • Application: Are you walking in the light? A true Christian’s life is characterized by honesty, integrity, and a desire to please God. Examine your life: Are there areas where you are hiding in darkness? Bring them into the light through confession and repentance.

Practical Steps to Be a True Christian

  1. Be Born Again: Acknowledge your need for spiritual rebirth and invite the Holy Spirit to transform your life.

  2. Have Faith in Jesus: Trust in His sacrifice for your salvation, knowing that it is only through Him that you have eternal life.

  3. Walk in the Light: Live transparently before God and others, allowing His Word to guide your decisions and actions.

  4. Grow Spiritually: Spend time in prayer, Bible study, and fellowship with other believers to deepen your relationship with God.

  5. Share the Gospel: Just as Nicodemus sought Jesus, there are others searching for truth. Share the good news of salvation with them.

Conclusion

Nicodemus came to Jesus seeking answers, and he left with the truth that being a true Christian means experiencing a spiritual rebirth, placing faith in Christ, and living in the light. Today, Jesus offers the same invitation to us. Are you ready to fully embrace what it means to be a true Christian? Surrender your life to Him, and let His love and truth transform you completely.
